Second Church was launched in 1929 when Evanston's First Church of Christ, Scientist (now the Music Institute of Chicago), had more people attending than pews available. Meeting first in Haven Elementary School on Prairie Avenue, members built the current building after World War II, and the Reading Room on Central Street opened in 1955. Members discussed merging First Church with Second Church in the 1990's, and the consolidation was finalized in 2001
